EDUC 3385 Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching explores human diversity and the instructional practices and teacher stances that respond to the social and cultural contexts in which children learn and develop. This professional development course examines the establishment and change over time of social and cultural systems and considers educators' efforts to implement the principles and approaches of culturally responsive teaching and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Aspects of human diversity will encompass learning communities for culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse student populations. The course also examines how biases, both personal and structural, influence instructional practices, curriculum, and policies in public education. Additionally, the course critically probes the political, economic, and educational infrastructures that influence students’ access to equitable educational experiences. Teacher candidates will develop reflective practices to continually deepen cultural responsiveness. Prerequisite: Acceptance to the Teacher Education Program
