EDUC 4965 Teaching Residency II
Teaching Residency II is the final of two residency courses that culminate the professional development sequence required for Texas teacher certification. UIW teacher candidates assume the role of resident teachers and complete a full semester’s placement in partnership schools under the supervision of a host teacher and a university supervisor. Resident teachers assume the responsibilities of the professional educator and, therefore, will follow the campus’ reporting expectations for teachers, including professional development, faculty meetings, department planning, parent-teacher conferences, as well as all teaching and campus duties. Placements are assigned by the assigned district/campus in conjunction with the UIW Residency Coordinator and Director of Teacher Education. Residents will be notified of reporting dates that align with the placement district’s calendar (dates may vary from the UIW calendar).
This course is completed in conjunction with the Teaching Residency Seminar in the spring semester of the residency sequence required for Texas teacher certification. Throughout the placement, the resident will engage in an examination and analysis of teaching practices and professional expectations. The resident must demonstrate competence in effective instructional design and delivery, classroom management, professional communication, and ongoing professional development. At the end of the semester’s placement, the resident teacher, host teacher, and supervisor participate in a three-way summative conference. The resident teacher must receive certification recommendations from both the host teacher and supervisor to successfully complete the residency placement. The recommendations will be noted on the summative evaluation and reflected in the grade assignments (grades of B- or higher indicate recommendation; lower grades indicate the recommendation was not granted).
