Film -- BFA

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film cultivates the personal voice of the artist, forming the foundation of their creative identity. Students develop a deep understanding of film and media while exploring its history, current trends and future possibilities. The artist hones their storytelling skills through screenwriting, directing, and editing. The program features an intensive, hands-on approach to camera, lighting, sound, and set work. Grounded in both theory and practice, students immerse themselves in storytelling techniques to shape creative narratives that resonate with audiences. This blend of theory, creativity, and craftsmanship allows the student to create engaging cinematic experiences that communicate their voice clearly and powerfully. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film prepares students for careers in storytelling, film, and the creative arts.

Degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film

The purpose of the BFA in Film is five-fold:

  1. Cultivate a personal voice that embodies the artist’s unique perspective.
  2. Develop a broad understanding of film and media’s history, current issues and future possibilities.
  3. Generate a foundation of theoretical concepts in film and critically apply them to cinematic works.
  4. Master storytelling techniques through screenwriting, mise-en-scene, directing, and editing to produce engaging cinematic works.
  5. Through a broad foundation of theory, narrative and non-narrative filmmaking structures, and competent technical skills in camera, lighting, prop and set work, create meaningful cinematic experiences to communicate the filmmaker’s voice.

These purposes will be accomplished through a robust and comprehensive collection of courses that provide theoretical and hands-on tools to refine and amplify the students' filmmaking voice. All students interested in careers in film, film production, cinematography, and film directing are welcome to enroll. This BFA is a four-year degree and will require extensive studio training and time and will graduate students who are experts with industry-standard equipment. Once students have mastered the technical and story-telling aspects of filmmaking, students will complete a thesis film project during their senior year.
