Degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film
The purpose of the BFA in Film is five-fold:
- Cultivate a personal voice that embodies the artist’s unique perspective.
- Develop a broad understanding of film and media’s history, current issues and future possibilities.
- Generate a foundation of theoretical concepts in film and critically apply them to cinematic works.
- Master storytelling techniques through screenwriting, mise-en-scene, directing, and editing to produce engaging cinematic works.
- Through a broad foundation of theory, narrative and non-narrative filmmaking structures, and competent technical skills in camera, lighting, prop and set work, create meaningful cinematic experiences to communicate the filmmaker’s voice.
These purposes will be accomplished through a robust and comprehensive collection of courses that provide theoretical and hands-on tools to refine and amplify the students' filmmaking voice. All students interested in careers in film, film production, cinematography, and film directing are welcome to enroll. This BFA is a four-year degree and will require extensive studio training and time and will graduate students who are experts with industry-standard equipment. Once students have mastered the technical and story-telling aspects of filmmaking, students will complete a thesis film project during their senior year.
