ARTH 3315 The Art and Architecture of Christianity - from Early Christian to Modernity

This is an introductory survey of the history of Christian visual and material culture from the Early Christian period to modernity, charting the evolving representation of holy figures and narratives with the changing theological and historical context, as well as an analysis of how sacred architecture and ritual objects produce spiritually transformative spaces. Readings and discussions will focus on patronage, iconography, iconoclasm, schisms, syncretism, pilgrimages, and holy wars; on architecture ranging from stately imperial basilicas to humble monastic buildings; and on objects such as reliquaries, altarpieces, ritual vestments, memento mori ornaments, illuminated books, paintings, and sculpture.
