ANGD 5312 Story: Elements and Structure

Part of the ANGD Masters of Game Development program, this lecture course focuses on narrative includes a critical and craft analysis of story structures, storytelling techniques, and narrative tropes in various genres (film; video games; short stories; novels; etc.), including practical application of those techniques in developing the student’s own creative work. Instruction aims to give the student a broad narratological understanding of story elements via analysis of exemplary films, games, and published narratives. Coursework includes exercises (analytical and creative) designed to bridge the gap between an academic understanding of narrative and the implementation of best techniques for the purpose of creating, revising, and refining original narratives in multiple genres.
