Academic Advising

UIW ACADEMIC ADVISING

Academic advising, based in the teaching and learning mission of higher education, is a series of intentional interactions with a curriculum, a pedagogy, and a set of student learning outcomes. Academic advising synthesizes and contextualizes students’ educational experiences within the frameworks of their aspirations, abilities and lives to extend learning beyond campus boundaries and timeframes. ADVISING SUPPORT

The UIW Broadway Campus programs for undergraduate students offer two types of academic advisors to support students on their academic journey with one being Faculty Advisors and the other, University Advising Center (UAC) Professional Advisors. By combining the expertise of faculty advisors with the comprehensive support of the UAC, UIW ensures that all students receive the personalized guidance they need to thrive academically.

·      UAC Professional Advisors specialize in guiding undeclared, transfer, transient, and non-degree seeking students. They can also serve as a primary advisor for lowerclassmen within a program and a secondary advisor for upperclassmen. Additionally, the UAC provides supplemental advising to declared transfer students, students on academic probation, and anyone needing further guidance after meeting with their assigned Primary Advisor.

·      Faculty Advisors are professors within their specific academic program within their college. They can be a student's primary advisor, for both lowerclassmen and upperclassmen, depending on the college's guidelines.

UAC MISSION

The mission of the University Advising Center (UAC) is to support the holistic development of students while providing academic support for progression through their academic program.  Advisors partner with students in the learning process, helping them identify and grow in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding as they move towards graduation and prepare for a life as global citizens.

UAC ADVISING GOALS

  • Informational: Assist students in the development of educational plans that are consistent with students’ aspirations, interests, strengths, and values.
  • Conceptual: Support the development of the whole student by encouraging holistic engagement with the college experience (academically, socially, culturally, and professionally), preparing students for a life of learning in a diverse and global society.
  • Relational: Provide quality academic advising to students that fosters a campus culture that supports academic advising as a shared responsibility essential to the educational experience and student success.
