Program Overview
The Master of Science in Kinesiology is a 30-credit hour program designed for those students who are interested in advancing their knowledge and application within the field of Kinesiology.
The Kinesiology graduate program is designed to provide individuals in fitness, health, and sport related fields with a higher level insight into the science and methodology of current topics, research, and technological advancements related to Kinesiology. Students will be able to take the skills and knowledge gained in this program and apply it to the fields of fitness instruction, strength and conditioning, coaching, clinical exercise testing, and research.
Admissions Requirements
Prior to consideration by the program, applicants for the Master of Science in Kinesiology must satisfy the General Requirements and Application Procedures for graduate study at University of the Incarnate Word. International student applicants must satisfy the current standards for admission set by International Student Services https://www.uiw.edu/admissions/internationaladmissions/
Admission or denial of admission to the Master of Science in Kinesiology program will be based on information and materials provided by the applicant and/or gathered by program staff. The three areas of (1) academic performance, (2) communication, and (3) professional conduct will form the basis for all admission or denial of admission decisions.
Tier One – Full Admission
• Applicants will be classified as Tier One with a GPA 3.0 or above and Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 (BIOL 2321 and BIOL 2322) with C or higher.
• Tier One applicants will have no restrictions on enrollment.
Tier Two – Probationary
• Applicants will be classified as Tier Two with either of the following:
o GPA 2.0 – 2.99 with Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 (BIOL 2321 and BIOL 2322) with C or higher, or
o English as Second Language students
• Tier Two applicants with be reassessed on preparedness for graduate level study at the end of the first full semester in the program. Deficiency in any of the following may result in the student not being allowed to continue in the Kinesiology program until remediation of the deficiency occurs and with approval of the program director.
o academic performance (i.e., earning a ‘C’ grade in any class),
o oral communication with faculty and/or fellow students (i.e., ability to combine listening and speaking skills to adequately converse about course content and/or requirements), or
o professional conduct (e.g., attending meetings on time, using expected standards of communication, or fulfilling group commitments)
Denial of Admission and Continuation
• Applicants will be denied admission and current students will be denied continuation in the program if assessment by the program director finds the applicant not adequately prepared to succeed in this graduate program. This assessment result will be based on demonstration of, or a history of, low academic performance (i.e., GPA below 2.0), poor communication (i.e., inability to communicate to a reasonable standard), or lacking in professional conduct (e.g., missing appointments, not meeting agreed standards of behavior). Continuation of an admitted student may be allowed after remediation of the deficiency and the approval of the program director.
