Courses leading to eligibility to take the Family Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification exams are available to students with a master's degree in nursing. Generally, the post-master's certificate program consists of between 19 and 25 course credits in each concentration. Most courses have a clinical component, and students complete a total of at least 500 clinical practicum hours. Students must apply using the usual application processes.

Admissions Requirements

Candidates for admission to the nursing certification program should have

  • an earned graduate degree in nursing (MSN, DNP, PhD) from an accredited institution;
  • 3 prerequisite courses taken within 5 years:
    • Advanced Health Assessment,
    • Advanced Pharmacology,
    • Advanced Pathophysiology,

    Nurse Practitioner Roles course is required if one has not been taken (i.e. student is a not a NP);

  • a minimum GPA of 3.0 in graduate coursework;
  • an acceptable personal essay and 3 references.
