Student Success: Academic Support Services
Academic Advising:
The University Advising Center (UAC) academic advisor guide students through the process of choosing a major and collaborates with students to develop realistic academic goals and degree plans that are consistent with their career plans. Throughout the advising process, academic advisors provide guidance on strategies to enhance study habits, critical thinking, problems solving, decision-making and time management skills.
Students who have already selected a major are assigned to a faculty advisor or academic advisor in their chosen field. Students work with their assigned advisor until graduation. To maximize their work with their assigned advisor until graduation. To maximize their academic experience, students are strongly encouraged to develop a sound relationship with their advisors and utilize their expertise. This relationship can generate extensive benefits before and after graduation.
Career Service:
The office of Career Services offers a variety of programs to help UIW students and alumni to seek professional employment. Program staff guide students and alumni in developing effective job seeking skills, including cover letter writing, resume development, and interviewing. For those uncertain about their career aspirations, major career assessments are available to help identify appropriate majors. The office also coordinates internship opportunities with the academic programs.
First Year Engagement:
The First Year Engagement (FYE) is dedicated to prompting the success of first-year students by enhancing students engagement. FYE assists students with finding answers to questions that will lead to their academic success. First-year students learn to understand that "you own your educations," which introduces self-responsibility and an awareness of the path to success. FYE advisors assist first year students in gaining time management and study skills to achieve academic success, selecting a major, developing a sense of community through campus involvement, identifying campus resources and matching with a peer mentor.
Student Disability Service:
The University of the Incarnate Word is committed to providing a supportive, challenging, diverse and integrated environment of all students. In compliance with Sections 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The University ensures accessibility to its programs, services and activities for qualified students with documented disabilities.
In accordance with the Department of Education's (DOE) Title IX regulations of the Educations Amendments of 1972, the University provides reasonable accommodations to any student on the basis of pregnancy or pregnancy related conditions.
To qualify for services, students must provide the Office of Student Disability Services with appropriate documentation of their disability at the time services and/or accommodations are requested.
TRIO Student Support Service:
TRIO is the U.S. Department of Education funded program that provides academic and non-academic services to eligible students. TRIO provides program participants with opportunities for academic development, assistance with college requirements, and continuous support until graduation. TRIO's services include academic tutoring, counseling, financial aid application and scholarship search assistance, graduate school application assistance, career activities, academic and cultural events. Program services are offered at no cost to eligible students.
Testing Service:
University Testing Services is committed to delivering supportive, accurate academic testing to students, staff, faculty members, and university departments in a secure and non-distracting environment.
University Testing Services currently administers the following tests:
- UIW Faculty Makeup Exams
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- BYU Foreign Language Achievement Test
- ADA Accommodated Testing
- Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA)
- Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
- DANTES Subject Standardized Tests
To request testing accommodations for disability, temporary disability (e.g., injury, surgery), or pregnancy, please contact the Student Disability Services Office.
Tutoring Services:
Tutoring Services guides students to succeed in foundational undergraduate courses in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, Spanish, and businesses.
Tutoring Services offers:
- One-on-one tutoring
- Group review sessions
- Help with time management and study skills

Writing and Learning Center:
The Writing and Learning Center (WLC) guides UIW undergraduate students in improving their writing skills so that they will be prepared to succeed in writing-intensive college courses and in their careers. The WLC offers individual consultations on papers for courses across a range of disciplines, in-class writing support for select composition courses, and additional online resources.
Academic Standing Policies:
ACADEMIC STANDING FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Probation:
Full time students who have an institutional cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 will be placed on scholastic probation. Students on scholastic probation may be required to meet and complete a learning contact that maps specific requirements for the subsequent semester. Learning contracts may limit the hours of enrollment, require the students to attend tutoring sessions and/or have other stipulations that the advisor has determined will assist the student in his/her path to graduation. This decision will be made the Provost of the University or their designee.
Suspension:
Students who earn a semester GPA of less than 2.0 in two consecutive semesters and have a cumulative institutional GPA of less than 2.0 will be notified that they are on enforced withdrawal and suspend from the University of the Incarnate Word. Notification of suspension will be sent to the student's official University Cardinal e-mail address. Students who are on suspension form the University will be withdrawn from all classes and will not be allowed to register for subsequent semesters. Students who are on Enforced Withdrawal fro the first time may appeal for an additional semester to improve the GPA. If such an appeal is granted, the student must complete learning contract and will be placed on Waived Withdrawal. If the student is on Waived Withdrawal and does not meet the terms of the learning contract, the student is then suspended with no appeal.
