EDUC 2316 Survey of Special Education in Secondary Settings
This course provides an overview of issues, trends, and instructional strategies related to special education in middle and high school contexts. An overview of mental health issues will introduce prospective teacher candidates to the characteristics of and interventions for adolescents who present academic, emotional, and social needs. Instructional strategies addressing high-incidence areas of special education (learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, gifted and talented, etc.) will be the primary focus of the course. Also included, will be the history and current issues of special education, legal consideration concerning the rights and responsibilities involved in teaching students with special needs, characteristics of various categories of special education, and collaboration with the family and community support services. This course is the prerequisite for optional special education courses. Secondary/all-level teaching candidates may elect to complete the special education minor.
