Psychology (B.A.)

49-59 semester hours in Psychology as follows:

1. 21 semester hours of required core courses:

PSYC 1301Introduction to Psychology

2. Completion of a concentration:

Option A: General Psychology (12 hours)

In addition to completion of the PSYC core, students will select courses from each of the following groups: Human Development (3 hours), Social Influences (3 hours), and Advanced Courses in Psychology (9 hours).  Students will also complete four PSYC elective courses and complete a minor.
  1. Human Development (3 hours from):
    1. PSYC 2356, Lifespan Development
    2. PSYC 2370, Child and Adolescent Development
    3. PSYC 2372, Adult Development and Aging
  2. Social Influences (3 hours from):
    1. PSYC 3340, Community Psychology and Drug Use Prevention
    2. PSYC/SOCI 3351, Social Psychology
    3. PSYC 3385, Multicultural Psychology
    4. PSYC 3365, Experiential Cross-Cultural Psychology
  3. Advanced Psychology Courses (NOTE: These courses require reading from primary resources in addition to or instead of textbooks, 9 hours from): 
    1. PSYC 4327, Sensation and Perception
    2. PSYC 4330, Developmental Psychology
    3. PSYC 4332, Theories of Psychotherapy
    4. PSYC 4335, Learning and Behavior
    5. PSYC 4340, Physiological Psychology
    6. PSYC 4345, Social Development
    7. PSYC 4353, Social Cognition
    8. PSYC 4359, Directed Practicum/Internship
    9. PSYC 4376, Cognitive Psychology
    10. PSYC 4380, Psychometrics
    11. PSYC 4381, Advanced Statistics
    12. CRJU/PSYC 4490,  Drug Use Prevention and Criminal Justice Internship
  4. Four elective courses in PSYC (12 hours).  In addition to the many PSYC electives available, any additional course(s) completed from the Development, Social Influences, or Advanced Courses group can serve as an elective.
  5. A minor (.e., courses in another discipline) or an additional major.

Option B: Addiction Prevention Specialist/Community Psychology (21 hours)

This option leads to eligibility for certification as a "certified prevention specialist" in Texas. In addition to the Psychology core for the major, these courses are required:


  1. Three hours from the Human Development (3 hours) group:
    1. PSYC 2356, Lifespan Development
    2. PSYC 2370, Child and Adolescent Development
    3. PSYC 2372, Adult Development and Aging
  2. Completion of either PSYC 3351, Social Psychology, or PSYC 3385, Multicultural Psychology, (3 hours)
  3. Completion of either PSYC 4380, Psychometrics, or PSYC 4381, Advanced Statistics, (3 credit hours)
  4. Completion of all of the following courses (18 hours)
    1. PSYC 3340, Community Psychology and Drug Use Prevention
    2. PSYC 3325, Drugs and Modern Society, or CRJU 3325, Drugs and Crime in Society
    3. PSYC 3465, Drug Use Prevention and Interventions 
    4. PSYC/CRJU 4490, Drug Use Prevention and Criminal Justice Internship (must be taken twice for 8 hours credit)
