International Admissions

The University welcomes the applications of international students.  An international student is defined as a student that does not hold US citizenship or permanent residency and requires a visa to enter the United States. Although a rolling admission policy is in effect, it is recommended that students apply to the University no later than 90 days before the beginning of the semester the student plans to attend.  Students are required to purchase U.S. health insurance through the university.

International Graduate Admissions

International graduate students must submit the following to the International Admissions Office.

  • A signed International Student Application. The application must be signed by the student, not by a parent, guardian or agency. Applications are available online on the International Admissions webpage. 
  • Official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended and proof of graduation. All official transcripts must be translated into English before they are submitted.
  • For consideration of transfer credit, course descriptions officially translated into English and a detailed course or course by course evaluation are required. A list of evaluation agencies is available from the Office of International Admissions.
  • Proof of English Proficiency
  • Report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller Analogies Test (MAT), or the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) by the testing agency to UIW, as designated by specific graduate program.
  • Immigration and Financial Requirements.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

English Proficiency Requirements for International Students 

All international students are required to submit proof of English proficiency to be fully admitted to the University of the Incarnate Word and be eligible to register for courses. Students who do not meet one of the below requirements may apply for Conditional Admission thru the International Admission Office.

Exams

  • TOEFL iBT –83 graduate
  • IELTS Academic - 6.5 overall band score
  • TOEIC –700 graduate
  • CAE (Cambridge Advanced) - C1
  • PTE Academic (Pearson's) –56 graduate
  • Duolingo English Test –110 graduate
  • Completion of UNAM- San Antonio's Academic Preparation Course with TOEFL equivalencies on exit exam

International School/Bi-National Curriculum Exemptions

  • School awards US diploma
  • School holds US regional accreditation 
  • IB diploma holders

Third Country Nationals 

Any student (regardless of nationality) who completes secondary education or a Bachelor/Master’s degree in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), New Zealand or the United Kingdom will be exempt from submitting English proficiency scores. Other English speaking countries will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 

Exemptions for International Students Studying in the United States 

  • Earned a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited US institution 

 

English as a Second Language 

International students who do not meet the English Proficiency requirements may apply for conditional admission. The university partners with UNAM San Antonio for Intensive English Language instruction.  UNAM San Antonio is located in Hemisfair Park. Tuition and fees for English Language courses are paid directly to UNAM San Antonio. The Form I-20 for conditionally admitted students is issued by UNAM San Antonio.

Students from non-English speaking countries will receive a waiver from the foreign language core requirement. For further information, please contact the Registrar’s Office.
